Saluting Willie Mays

Friday, May 6

SAN FRANCISCO — I’m officially off-duty tonight in the wake of the Giants’ three-city, 10-game trip, but I’m heading for AT&T Park anyway.

The Giants are celebrating Willie Mays’ 80th birthday with pregame festivities and video tributes (I’d bet anything that President Obama will do one), and I want to be there to soak it all in.

Think about that: I last watched Willie play 38 years ago, and I’m still drawn to the ballpark just to see him. The more things change, the more they stay the same, right?

We at launched a Willie Mays Tribute Page today. Please check it out if you haven’t already. Here’s the link:

I am a big fan of Willie Mays. I loved watching him play. I am 56 years old and still remembering travelling to New York and Phillie to see him play when the Giants came east. I would convince my father and brothers to go the games. We grew up in Scanton PA. Please wish Willie my best. I would love to be able to reach him and tell him how much I appreciated his play. I loved following his career. I would always read the box scores and remember many times how he went from 10st to home on a single. You never see that now. I play some centerfield and tried to catch like Willie. I got pretty good at it and i didn’t do it all the time.
I would love to hear back and hear how Willie is doing. He must have so many fans still.

Sorry for the s-l-o-w reply. Willie’s doing fine. He hasn’t been at the park as much this year, but he looks and sounds good.
